Why am I getting framerate spikes in WoW when somebody casts an ability?

Whenever myself or someone around me hits somebody with a spell or ability, my framerate drops to below 10. I normally run at 60 fps because I have an HD 5770. Is there any reason for this? I have the graphics on high, and I've run WoW on max settings and never had a problem.
